Health and Physical Education

Hi I am Matt Piparo and I am the classroom teacher for Room 16. I moved to Kalgoorlie in 2010, I taught at Kalgoorlie Primary for 8 years and have been teaching at Hannans Primary since 2018. My passions are sport and teaching mathematics.

The students of Room 16 continue to consolidate the learning of previous years, building on their personal strengths and working on weaknesses. Visible learning and critical thinking techniques seek to expand on prior learning and while there is a greater focus on more structured classroom teaching, co-operation, collaboration and group-work remain significant modes of learning. Room 16 has high expectations and work with restorative practice if required.

Year 5 and 6 students enjoy the opportunity to learn more about leadership and to further explore their Character Strengths. The expectations of Year 6 students are significant, across all aspects of School life; A highlight for the year is the annual school camp, which provides students with a variety of challenges and unique learning experiences.

This year I am fortunate enough to be using some long service leave and take every second Wednesday off. In my absence the class is taught by Miss Jasinta Saraceni. I believe this provides students with an opportunity to learn from different teachers with different teaching styles and is great practice for a skill required in high school. We are also fortunate to have the magnificent Education Assistant Mrs Dee Wheatcroft work in our room for 3 days a week. I am passionate about teaching and learning and I am always looking for ways to refine and improve my own teaching as I believe that “Learning from a teacher who has stopped learning is like drinking water from a stagnant pond”.

I look forward to a successful year and cannot wait to tackle the challenges that are presented to us.
